since 2021

what is mōris

mōris is an independent community radio from mauritius. a frequency, a library, and a place to belong · for everyone who carries the indian ocean in their ears.

the story

a frequency that became a home

mōris started in 2021 as mauritius community radio · a frequency to keep people connected through covid. the island had gone quiet, so we made a place to gather without leaving home.

when the world reopened, the community never left. what began as a lifeline turned into something we could not switch off.

today it is the platform · live radio, shows, a deep indian ocean library, the storë at caudan, events, and the hüb. the same room, much bigger, still ours.

what we believe

the radio is the heartbeat, the community is the point

community over audience

we never built a crowd to broadcast at. we built a room to be in together. listeners here are part of it, not numbers in it.

curated, made by mauritians

every show, every selection comes from people who live this culture. nothing here is automated taste. it is mōris, picked by hand.

independent

no algorithm setting the rotation, no label deciding the sound. we answer to the community and the music, and nothing else.

the radio is the heartbeat

the stream keeps us in rhythm, but the point was always the people. the radio is how we stay together · the community is why.

who runs it

artists, not a media company

mōris is run by a team of artists, musicians and producers. the same house holds five labels · BABANI, BAD, ZANANA, ë • music and Mutewax · and works with more than 70 artists. it has been operating for twenty years.

that matters when you read your rights or the record on MASA. we are not neutral observers. our own artists are affected by what those pages describe, and we have an interest in the system changing. we would rather say so plainly than let anyone discover it later.

it is also why every figure on those pages points to a document you can open yourself. you are not asked to trust us. you are asked to check.

the standard we hold ourselves to

the same questions we ask of everyone else

it would be worthless to demand transparency from an institution and exempt ourselves. so here is the standard, and we expect to be measured against it exactly as anyone else would be.

consent before publication. we ask before we put a recording online. where a rightsholder or a family says no, it comes down. if you find something of yours here that you did not agree to, write to mail@moris.community and we will take it down while we sort it out, not after.

a register, not a black box. we are building a public, searchable record of what we hold and who it belongs to. an archive whose contents cannot be inspected is asking for the same trust we are arguing nobody should have to give.

where the music comes from. most of what you hear here was given to us directly by the artists and the families who hold the rights. the NININ discography is here because it was entrusted to us. so are recordings from many other artists who wanted their work kept somewhere it would be looked after and heard. that is a relationship, not a catalogue acquisition, and we treat it that way.

no advertising, no commercial gain. mōris is a community platform. there are no ads on the stream, nobody buys placement in the rotation, and no algorithm decides what plays. we are not selling an audience to anyone. the point of the room is the room.

on licences. we are confirming, properly, what the regulatory position is for a non-commercial community platform in mauritius, and we will publish it here once it is settled rather than describe it from memory. we got one detail about our own position wrong earlier and pulled it rather than publish something inaccurate about ourselves. the rule is the same for us as for every other figure on this site: if it is not verified, it does not go up.

succession. heritage should not depend on one person staying interested or one hard drive staying alive. what we hold is mirrored, catalogued and documented so it outlives any of us.

corrections. if something on this site is wrong, tell us and we fix it, visibly. that serves us more than it serves anyone else.

where to go next

your music, your rights, your money

if you make music in mauritius, the pages below are the reason this one exists. they explain how rights and royalties actually work here, what the published figures show, and what can be done about it. every number points to a document you can open yourself.

from mauritius, to the world.
